Abstract
When criticizing a translation in Korea, it is difficult to reflect various viewpoints because the translation and the translator are regarded as subordinate to the author and the original text and the criticism is mostly based on the comparison between the original and the translated texts. However, as the Translator Studies has emerged as one of critical areas, translators’ intention and awareness are considered as crucial factors that influence the rewriting process in literary translation. Therefore, this study attempts to apply a comprehensive translation criticism that examines translation with the translator placed at the center as an agent of rewriting texts in translation To this end, the translations of two Korean novels, The Vegetarian and The Accusation, both of which are translated by Deborah Smith, are examined with the paratextual intention and extratextual awareness of the translator in full consideration.
