- Abstract
- This study examined the patterns of rejection speech acts' strategies used by Chinese learners of Korean according to their learning environments. In situations where invitations, requests, and suggestions are rejected using DCT, we examined which rejection strategies out of KS, CS, ACKSL, and ACKFL were used by the four groups, depending on the topic and variables, and we compared the strategies used by the two learner groups, i.e. ACKSL and ACKFL. We also evaluated which group was closer to KS or CS. The results of the study revealed that firstly, the rejection strategies used by the two groups, i.e. ACKSL and ACKFL, differed in situations where they rejected invitations from superiors and subordinates, requests from superiors and close friends, and suggestions from peers. Secondly, ACKSL showed a better ability to adjust appropriate rejection strategies according to intimacy compared to ACKFL. Thirdly, although ACKSL is logically closer to KS's utterance, both ACKSL and ACKFL may be influenced by their mother tongue when speaking, and they may be closer to CS in certain situations.
