Comparison of Korean Translations of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile: Focusing on the Description of Key Characters

초록

This study analyzes three Korean translations of Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile" from 1989, 2003, and 2013. Its goal is to investigate how translation choices influence reader perception and the suspense of the story. Specifically, the study focuses on three key characters: Hercule Poirot, Linnet Ridgeway, and Jacqueline de Bellefort. It examines how their physical descriptions, dialogues, and personality nuances are portrayed in each translation. To understand the impact of different translating strategies over time, the research uses a descriptive translation studies framework. The findings indicate that even minor differences in character translation can significantly alter the narrative, affecting the resolution of the mystery and the reader's engagement. The paper emphasizes the importance of accurately portraying characters in translation. It highlights how translators shape the reception of a literary work and navigate cultural nuances to maintain the integrity of the original text's complex character dynamics and plot developments.
