- Abstract
- Long Day's Journey into Night which is one of Eugene O'Neill's later plays was written in part as a way for him to show the world what his family was like and in what sort of environment he was raised. This paper explores the meaning of disease in the work through the Foucault’s theory on disciplinary power and claims that Mary, a morphine addict, shows the tragedy of modern subjects adapting to disciplinary power. According to Foucault, what generalizes the power to punish, then, is not the universal consciousness of the law in each juridical subject; it is the regular extension, the infinitely minute web of panoptic techniques. Power is also a major source of social discipline and conformity. In modern society, the systems of surveillance and assessment no longer required force or violence, as people learned to discipline themselves and behave in expected ways. Disciplinary and bio-power create a ‘discursive practice’ or a body of knowledge and behaviour that defines what is legal, general, acceptable, abnormal, etc. - but it is a discursive practice that is nonetheless in constant flux. I think that Mary, a morphine addict in Lond Day’s Journey into Night, is thought to be a good example of applying Foucault’s account. Family interest in Mary is a medical practice and partly combined by economic and political management. Through this process, the medical practice and knowledge associated with controlling Mary are essential to the maintenance and development of the Tyrone family. As a result, I assert Mary's determination to influence her entire life, patriarchal order and medical care have tamed her in the same way as control and isolation, turning her into a social patient.
