- Abstract
- Countries around the world are hurriedly coming up with mid- and long-term policies to take the lead in the technological race of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution. However, questions remain about how to adapt the notion of the 4.0 industrial revolution to the real world.
Based on the analysis of the policy contents of the Society 5.0 promoted by the Japanese government, this article considers ways to put the 4.0 Industrial Revolution into practice. To this end, this study sets two research objectives. First, various documents from the Japanese government and relevant agencies were analyzed to clearly identify and define the Society 5.0 and the related policies. The findings are as follows. Literature review indicates that at the core of Society 5.0 are extending "healthspan", achieving transit revolution, creating next-generation supply chain, building communities with an improved living environment, and establishing new payment services. Interviews with practitioners in the medical and opening fields show that while respondents in these areas are trying to apply the concept of the 4th Industrial Revolution to their practice, but that they had low expectations about "smart work" and "smart management." This study has the following research implications. First, measures to apply the 4th Industrial Revolution to reality are taken into consideration by the policy contents and objectives of the Society 5.0. In particular, the policy effect and the actual improvement attained by the Society 5.0 were felt differently among policymakers, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Attention should be paid to the cause of this difference better guidelines are needed to prepare for the 4th Industrial Revolution in the future.
