Abstract
A huge volume of textile wastewater is generated on a daily basis from textile industries. Microbial mediated dye decolorization mostly emphasized the submerged culture conditions. To combat huge volumes of textile wastewater generated in industrial processes, it is not practically feasible to apply submerged microbial culture conditions for dye decolorization. Hence, to overcome this problem, a sustainable alternative is to remove the dyes from huge volumes of textile wastewater by either “adsorption processes”, or “cost-effective coagulation” processes. The generated dye-sludge from these processes can be further bio-remediated under the solid-state fermentation (SSF) conditions. This strategy allows the utilization of diverse agro-industrial waste biomasses as support-substrate, making the process more sustainable, economical, and eco-friendly. SSF is mainly defined as the microbial fermentation of solid wastes in the absence of free-flowing water. SSF possesses the advantage of supporting the growth and metabolism of microorganisms under moist conditions. This chapter focuses on the discussion regarding the hybrid treatment strategies of combining physical processes “adsorption/coagulation” with biological SSF processes. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
