Abstract
This study examines the expectations that Netflix, known for producing so-called "progressive" content in political and gender-related aspects, has raised the anticipation of providing a space for a female-centric audience. Particularly, the emergence of female-centric content on Netflix, facilitated by its proprietary algorithm system, has amplified these expectations. However, this research proceeds from a critical standpoint, questioning whether such optimistic expectations might be a fantasy of post-feminism. Visual images of violent women, critically examined through works of art, are transformed into female heroes and sometimes dangerous femme fatales according to political and social demands or the desires of culturally dominant men, and are continuously used to solidify patriarchal ideology. While the image of a strong woman portrayed in the movie <Kill Boksoon> may seem to symbolize equal power and strength between men and women, it conceals underlying male voyeurism and latent fears. Furthermore, within the neo-liberal worldview constructed by the film, the existence of Boksoon, a dominant female killer, reinforces male discrimination and injustice, strengthening the hegemony of misogyny. This paper reveals that even Netflix, which strengthens female-centric content through critical analysis and deconstruction, has limitations in representing 'women' due to its adherence to a male-centric perspective and ideology. Assessing the current status and limitations of female-centric content in this way is an important task for advancing feminist narratives and promoting changes in gender hegemony.
