- Abstract
- This paper explores the representation of female makeup in the works of two prominent artists of the femme fatale theme, Gustave Moreau and Gustav Klimt, focusing on their portrayals of women. It examines the similarities and differences in the depiction of femme fatales in their portraits, while also delving into the multiple layers of meaning embedded within these female images. Both artists share the commonality of drawing inspiration from mythology to reimagine women, yet they approach the concept of the femme fatale differently: Moreau conveys it through the ambivalent nature of his female figures, whereas Klimt emphasizes sensuality as a defining trait of the femme fatale. This study gains significance by analyzing the characteristics of femme fatale imagery from the perspective of makeup, shedding light on the value of in novation and new perspectives that transcend tradition, and uncovering the message such depictions offer to contemporary viewers.
