Abstract
Purpose This paper intends to study the impact of the logistics industrial aggregation on the regional economy after analyzing the logistics industrial aggregation in China. In addition, this paper also attempts to provide policy suggestions for the development of China’s logistics industry. Design/Methodology/Approach In this paper, the total amount of production by region was set as a dependent variable, and the LQ index, the wage of workers in the logistics industry, the number of freight cars, population density, scientific research expenses and financial expenditure were set as explanatory variables. Data from 31 provinces relative to the logistics industry from 2001 to 2017 which were sourced from the China Statistical Yearbook and the China Logistics Yearbook were used. Particularly, the key variable, the LQ index, was divided into total, aggregation level (top, middle, bottom), and region (eastern, midland, western) to establish three panel models for empirical analysis. Findings I Overall, it was found that the LQ index did not affect the local economy. When the LQ index was divided into the top, middle, and bottom levels, the middle and bottom LQ indexes were found to be significant, whereas the top LQ index was not significant. In addition, when it was divided into the eastern, midland, and western regions, the midland and western regions appeared to be significant, whereas the eastern region was not. Research Implications Research results revealed that the LQ index of the logistics industry has a different effect on the regional economy depending on the level of aggregation and the region. This will be the basic data for the Chinese government to use as it establishes policies to improve the efficiency of the logistics industry.
