Abstract
This paper examines representations of woman by female playwrights such as Lady Gregory and Anne Devlin and also a male playwright such as Stewart Parker in order to consider the significance of women. In the 20th century, theatre in Ireland has been a highly exciting and questionable space of cultural enactment regarding notions of woman and gender. It is important to interrogate the representation of woman as an idealized trope of nation. This paper offers an opportunity to bring us further along the way to discover women’s voices, words, and bodies in Irish theatre. Key words: Irish theater, women, Gregory, Anne Devlin, Stewart Parker
