- Abstract
- Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) can be recognized by their higher brightness when compared to those of conventional liquid crystal displays owing to the fact that they do not require a polarizer. In this study, we propose a photoluminescence-polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal (PL-PDChLC) in which a chiral dopant is added to a PDLC containing green, red, and blue photoluminescent materials. We examined potential improvements in the reflectivity and color for a high performance reflective display devices through investigating the influence of the added chiral dopant on light reflectivity and the color gamut in a PL-PDChLC. We found that it was possible to significantly improve reflectivity and to easily control the color gamut through enhancement of PL emission efficiency and selective reflection intensity by adding the chiral dopant to PL-PDLC.
