Abstract
In this paper, the dynamic response of transmission lines with an initial deflection and containing Stockbridge dampers is investigated. Generally, transmission lines can be modeled assuming a cable element owing to their slender shape. However, if Stockbridge dampers are installed on the transmission line, the bending rigidity should not be ignored because the damping force acts as a concentrated force. Additionally, extension-bending coupling must be considered for the transmission line with an initial deflection and tension. Based on the assumption of the strain field and initial condition, a new beam finite-element formulation for the line is presented, and the dynamic response of the line including Stockbridge dampers is analyzed under vortex shedding loads. The proposed modeling is verified by comparing the responses of the proposed method with those obtained using a cable model and commercial finite-element software.
