- Abstract
- 본고는 그 간의 필자의 무학 관련 연구 성과를 검토하여 종합 정리 재론하고 새로운 기록을 추가하여 무학의 조선 건국 참여와 불교계 수호라는 주제로 논지를 전개 강조한 글이다. 무학은 지공의 유지를 받들어 스승 나옹과 더불어 회암사를 불교계의중흥을 꾀하다가 실패로 끝나고 나옹은 순교하였다. 무학은 그 후 스승지공과 나옹의 추념 사업을 전개하면서 삼봉 정도전 보다 먼저 이성계에게 신왕조 창업의 혁명을 종용하였다. 이와같은 조선 건국 사업에는 조계종의 무학 뿐만 아니라 천태종과 화엄종의 대표적인 고승도 동참하였다. 무학은 조선건국 직후 왕사로 책봉되어 국가비보사상으로 불교계의혁신과 재편을 위한 한양전도를 주도하였다. 그러면서 한양과 도성을 지키는 4대 수호 사찰을 지정하는 등 한성을 중심으로 불교계를 재편하여불교를 수호하고자 하였다.
