- Abstract
- This paper investigates a certain variability of the island effect in the coordinate structure in Korean. It is observed that when Across-the-Board (ATB) extraction out of relative clause islands in the coordinate structure takes place across an element located outside of the coordinate structure, it induces an island effect. When the element is not crossed, no island effect arises. I suggest that the variability of the island effect arises since extraction out of an island has an effect on the element located outside of the island, but not on the island itself (Kim and Park 2016: cf. Fox and Lasnik 2003; Merchant 2008). I also suggest that the effect is a PF-effect and thus can be repaired by ellipsis at PF.
