Abstract
This study clarifies the fact that the cause of transformation of shopping malls from the enclosed type of the suburbs to the open type is not because of their location in downtown areas, as argued by preceding studies, but because the malls pursued transformation from a space of ritualization that avoids the encounters of social members, to a rambling space to create the encounters of different social members and enjoy shopping while walking around. For this purpose, this study classifies the malls by spatial consideration of the outside (the approach), and the installation of the inside (connectivity: movement). In other words, this study newly clarifies the cause of transformation, based on the theory of Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson that the buildings composed of such internal and external elements of space formation form certain social relationships, and on the three kinds of connectivity (movements) defined by Kim Dovey and Scott Dickson.
