- Abstract
- Starting with the opening reforms of 1978, China has marched in tremendous strides to be the host country of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and to become the world’s second-largest economy. Spontaneously, the Chinese wave has swept over the world, and Korea has been no exception.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, after the severing of relations due to conflicting ideologies, Korea and China have rapidly promoted the development of close relations. As a result, China has become strategically cooperative, both politically and economically, becoming the largest trading partner and biggest export and import market of Korea. Accompanying the two countries’ development in relations, more demand for Chinese language skill had led 144 Korean universities to open Chinese language and literature departments as of 2012. The content of the education has been developed in a practically applicable manner, focusing on the early years right after the treaty of amity between Korea and China. Following this trend, studies for education in Chinese language have increased dramatically.
It has been 70 years since the department of Chinese language at Seoul National University was opened, showing that Korea has a longer history in Chinese language education than the past 20 years might suggest. At this point, this study seeks to reminisce on Chinese education in Korea and to suggest a progressive direction referring to the features and countermeasures.
