- Abstract
- 불교국가에서 가장 이상적인 불교적 군주로 받아들여지고 있는 인도 마우리야 왕조의 제3대 아쇼까(Aśoka)왕에 관해서 많은 이견들이 존재하고 있다. 사실상 인도 전역에서 발견되는 아쇼까왕 비문․석주에 나타나는 아쇼까왕과 남방 테라와다(Theravāda) 불교전통에 나타나는 아쇼까왕 사이에는 상당한 차이가 있다. 본 논문에서는 붓다고샤(Buddhaghosa)의 까타왓투(Kathāvatthu) 주석서(Aṭṭhakathā)의 서문에 나타난 제3결집과 관련된 내용들을 중심으로 제3결집에 관한 제반 내용들을 살펴보면서 남방불교에서 가장 이상적인 담마라자(dhammarāja)로 나타나는 아쇼까왕의 위상과 테라와다(Theravāda) 교단에서 제3결집에 가지는 사상적 위치를 살펴보도록 한다.
