<서상기(西廂記)> 번역의 수사시학 연구 -수사원형의 의상(意象)을 중심으로-

This study examines the translation phenomenon in The Romance of the Western Chamber by comparing the translations with the source text from a rhetorical perspective, focusing on the intersection of rhetoric and poetic, which forms rhetorical poetic. Rhetorical poetic participates in the artistic structure of the text and consists of rhetorical archetypes and rhetorical illusions. Imagery is a key artistic structural unit in the creation of Chinese classical poetry and represents a type of rhetorical archetypes. This study analyzes the functional characteristics of the “flower” and the “moon” within The Romance of the Western Chamber, and explores how these imageries were translated in two different translations. In the source text, the “flower” and the “moon” represent time, space, and symbolic meanings respectively, and have poetic functions that suggest changes in the emotions of characters. Target text 1 emphasizes literal translation, whereas target text 2 adopts a concise style to enhance reader comprehension. However, both translations exhibit limitations. Based on these findings, this study proposes four translation strategies. First, the translated language should be concise while maintaining the source text's aesthetic qualities. Second, the time imagery expressed through changes in natural elements, such as the changes of the moon or seasonal shifts in flowers, must preserve consistency throughout the text. Third, some expressions in Chinese, such as "fallen red petals" or "waning moon", which convey meanings distinct from those in Korean, require additional explanation. Fourth, supplementary explanations should be provided to help readers understand the cultural connotations embedded in natural imagery.
