Effect of Perceived Economic Mobility on Luck-pursuit Behavior: Focus on Mediating Effect of Fatalistic Belief

초록

As competition for employment intensifies and the economic burden on households increases due to rising housing prices and inflation, income inequality and psychological deprivation stemming from asset inequality are on the rise. In a social environment where economic mobility is perceived as limited, many individuals resort to luck-pursuit behaviors. Various consumption patterns emerge, characterized by an element of chance and the pursuit of fortune, such as investing in volatile virtual currencies, participating in raffle events for limited-edition products, and purchasing random or lucky boxes. This study investigates how the perception of a "broken economic ladder"—that is, the belief that economic upward mobility is frustrated—influences luck-pursuit behavior. Specifically, an experiment was conducted to confirm the impact of perceived economic mobility on luck-pursuit behavior and to verify the mediating effect of fatalistic beliefs in this process. The experimental results revealed that while the direct effect of perceived economic mobility on attitudes toward raffle events was not statistically significant, an indirect effect mediated by fatalistic beliefs was observed, indicating complete mediation. Consumers with a low perception of economic mobility exhibited higher fatalistic beliefs than those with a high perception, which, in turn, led to more favorable attitudes toward raffle events. Furthermore, the mediating effect of fatalistic beliefs on the relationship between perceived economic mobility and raffle event attitudes was moderated by escapism tendencies. In an additional analysis, virtual currency investment was also examined as a form of luck-pursuit behavior. The group whose economic mobility perception was manipulated as low showed a marginally significantly higher attitude toward virtual currency investment compared to the control group. Similar to raffle event attitudes, a mediating effect via fatalistic beliefs was found for virtual currency investment.
