국내 창작 뮤지컬의 ESG 가치 실현 사례 연구- 뮤지컬 <북극곰 로라>의 사례를 중심으로-

초록

This study analyzes the realization of ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) values in Korean original musical, focusing on the case of the musical <Laura The Polar Bear>. This study of the musi cal “Laura the Polar Bear” has academic value in that it is one of the few musicals in Korea that real izes ESG values, and it actively highlights environmental issues and has an educational effect. Furthermore, this research discusses the realization of ESG values from the perspective of arts educa tion, particularly education through performance. This study is structured as follows. Chapter 2 examines the definition and components of ESG, dis cussing the meaning and importance of the environment (E), social (S), and governance (G), as well as exploring their applications in the arts and the necessity of introducing ESG values. Chapter 3 ana lyzes the characteristics of the original fairy tale <Interview with Polar Bear Laura> and the musical adaptation <Laura The Polar Bear> from three perspectives. The original fairy tale features: (1) an thropomorphism of animals to present environmental issues through the eyes of children, (2) a narra tive highlighting the conflict between village residents and Laura over environmental practices, and (3) an emphasis on our commitment to a sustainable world through the promise with Laura. The mu sical adaptation, however, introduces distinct features: (1) variations in characters to explore environ mental issues from multiple perspectives, (2) the adoption of a mystery narrative where the village mayor disguises as a detective to resolve issues firsthand, and (3) active audience engagement through musical numbers and choreography embedding ESG values to encourage audience behavior change around environment. Chapter 4 discusses the examples of ESG values manifested in the musical <Laura The Polar Bear> from the perspectives of environment (E), social (S), and governance (G). First, "E" addresses the causes and solutions to environmental pollution as seen through Laura’s eyes. Second, "S" illustrates proper civic behavior through the village mayor's transformation into a detective. Third, "G" emphasizes the creation of a communal village, Ecopia, to solve the addressed issues. Consequently, the study confirms that ESG performances promote thought on "sustainability" and action-oriented thinking. By identifying the extent to which ESG can be applied to the performing arts, this study ultimately aims to contribute to the future conceptualization of ESG performance.
