A Study on the Imagery and Problem Recognition of Global Refugees through “Boat People”

초록

This paper is a study examining the imagery of global refugees and their perceptions of the problem in Cheon Geum-sung’s short story “Boat People”. Furthermore, I would like to point out the meaning of “Boat People” in Cheon Geum-sung literature. First, the characteristic of the novel is that it very acrimoniously embodies a physical space, a ship, and its grievances and misery. Refugees who have not been able to reach the land of other countries are shown very realistically risking their lives on ships. Through this, the tragedy of refugees and their desire for survival are maximized and symbolically revealed. Second, it suggests the perception and reality of the problem of refugees. This shows a realistic problem that cannot be solved by the ideal or humanitarian dimension alone. It also embodies that people's attitudes or perceptions toward refugees are not so positive. Third, the refugee problem is a problem to be solved together, and it implies its clues through literary imagination in order to coexist and live with refugees. This makes us realize that refugees must be viewed as ‘friendly others’. This novel is one of the few works created in Korean literature with refugees as the main subject, and is meaningful in that it reflects the author’s experience as a captain. Moreover, the fact that the current refugee problem is one of the global problems also gives implications for the current status and perception of refugees.
