Various Translations and Conflicts Represented in Translating Mo’um

초록

This study examines various translation concepts presented in Cathy Park Hong’s poetry collection Translating Mo’um and explores how meaning is conveyed through these concepts. It investigates the application and representation of ‘interlingual translation,’ ‘intralingual translation,’ ‘intersemiotic translation,’ and ‘cultural translation’ in the text. Additionally, the study examines the conflicts of language, culture, and gender that occur during the cultural translation process and how these conflicts are reflected in the text. Linguistically, the collision between Korean as a private language and English as a public language is represented through cultural translation, highlighting the author’s shift in perception from feeling shame towards Korean to eventually embracing pride in it. Culturally, the conflict between hegemonic Western culture and non-Western cultures is depicted in the text. Regarding gender, the author seeks to break free from the patriarchal constraints imposed on women, translating the notion that instead of differentiating and discriminating between men and women, a person can be seen as an androgynous being who embodies both masculinity and femininity. The concept of translation is no longer confined to ‘interlingual translation’ but has expanded and been applied across various fields. This study explores how translation concepts can be expanded and performed, hoping that this broadened understanding of translation will contribute to the creation of creative and experimental content in future discussions across different fields.
