On the Reflexes of Two Type Medials Wï and Wi in Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese and Sino-Vietnamese

초록

This study investigates the distinction between two type medials Wï and Wi in Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese and Sino-Vietnamese. The results of this research are as follows. 1)The two type medials Wï and Wi are distinct in Sino-Korean. Medial Wï appears as either [u] or [o] because of vowel harmony, and medial Wi appears as [i]. 2)Wï and Wi are distinct in Sino-Japanese Go’on. Medial Wï appears as [w], and medial Wi appears as [i], as in Sino-Korean. This pattern suggests that like Sino-Japanese Go’on, Sino-Korean originated in early middle Chinese. 3)Wï and Wi appear as the same type except of rhyme Zhong(鍾) in Sino-Japanese Kan’on. Medial Wï appears as Wi because it is the reflex of rate middle Chinese Wi which is the origin of Sino-Japanese Kan’on. 4)Wï and Wi appear as the same type in Sino-Vietnamese which is reflects from rate middle Chinese.
