중독과 독(毒)의 담론을 통한 융복합 교양교과목 개발 연구: D대학교 <중독의 시대: 독(毒)이야기> 교과목 설계 및 운영을 중심으로

This study reinterprets the concepts of ‘addiction’ and ‘toxicity’ in a multilayered and integrated manner, and presents a case of developing and operating an integrated liberal arts course at the university level. ‘Addiction’ is addressed not only in its pharmaceutical and medical dimensions but also as a sociocultural phenomenon and a newly emerging discourse. Similarly, ‘toxicity’ is examined as a dual symbolic concept that extends beyond physiologically harmful substances to include diverse cultural contexts, including literature and society. This study involved the design and implementation of an integrated course titled The Age of Addiction: The Story of Toxins at D University, which enabled students to explore the meanings of addiction and toxicity from multidisciplinary perspectives such as the humanities, natural sciences, medicine, pharmacy, and sociology. Through this, the course demonstrated its potential educational effects in enhancing students' integrated thinking and critical reflection skills, as well as their awareness of complex social issues. It also underscored the importance of cyclical course design that incorporates learner feedback and participatory teaching methods. Furthermore, this course shows potential to evolve into educational content that bridges the university and society, contributing to the expansion of practical humanities as a new model of integrated liberal arts education. This paper is significant in that it seeks new possibilities for theme-based liberal arts education through a multilayered and integrated understanding of addiction and toxicity.
