Verbal Lie Detection

초록

This chapter examines the cultural influences on deception detection, emphasizing the role of communication norms, linguistic expectations, and cultural conventions in shaping deceptive behavior and credibility assessments. It explores cross-cultural differences in verbal deception cues, demonstrating how truthfulness and deception are constructed and interpreted differently across cultures. Additionally, the chapter highlights the challenges posed by interpreter-mediated interviews, where translation may alter or obscure verbal indicators of deception, complicating credibility assessments in forensic and legal settings. The findings call for a departure from universal deception detection models and advocate for culturally adaptive approaches that account for variations in communication styles, cultural identity, and multilingual interactions. Future research should investigate how individuals influenced by multiple cultural frameworks exhibit hybrid deception strategies and explore methodologies to improve deception detection in cross-cultural and interpreter-mediated contexts. © 2026 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
