초록
This study analyzes the factors that transformed the relationship between Lee Cheongdam and Son Gyeongsan from partnership to parting within the historical context of the Unified Order's establishment and the Buddhist Purification Movement. Previous studies have treated the two monks separately, lacking sufficient analysis of their cooperation and conflict. During the Unified Order's establishment, Cheongdam and Gyeongsan laid a foundation for cooperation by taking on duties together. After its launch, they jointly planned projects to secure financial resources. During the Buddhist Purification Movement, they partnered as Gyeongsan publicized Cheongdam's purification ideals and promoted Hwadong (Reconciliation) to resolve the Order's financial issues. However, their visions diverged. Cheongdam sought a system centered on the Supreme Patriarch to implement purification ideals in administration, while Gyeongsan favored a system centered on the President of Administration taking responsibility for the Order's administration. Regarding married monks, Cheongdam maintained a hardline position for their expulsion, whereas Gyeongsan maintained a moderate stance, seeking Hwadong with them. These ideological and methodological differences ultimately led to their simultaneous resignation. Thus, their partnership and parting originated from a transitional period in Korean Buddhism, as its ideological and institutional systems were being established.
