석전의 선학 이해에 대한 고찰
초록
In this paper, we examined Seokjeon Park-Hanyoung's views on Zen in relation to Zen, focusing on three types of Buddhist popular magazines published in the early 20th century. The data used in this paper was extremely limited. However, there was no shortage in examining Seokjeon's views on Zen Buddhism. Seokjeon submitted 23 manuscripts related to Zen Buddhism to the popular Buddhist magazines JOSEONBULGYOWOLBO (朝鮮佛敎月報), HAEDONGBULBO (海東佛報), and SEONWON (禪苑). These manuscripts can be broadly divided into three areas. First, the literature of Zen Buddhism was introduced with annotations on TANJING (壇經) and JHONGFENGGUANGLU (中峰廣錄), which are the most widely read books in Zen Buddhism. This was to promote understanding of the literature that Zen Buddhism regards as a sacred text. In particular, the largest volume was contributed to the biography of Huineng (慧能). Furthermore, in the case of JHONGFENGGUANGLU, it was an essential document for understanding the typical aspect of Zen Buddhism's sayings because it contains comprehensive aspects of Zen Buddhism. Next, the five Kung-an (Topic)s that were considered important as methods of practicing Zen Buddhism were presented, and by criticizing them, it clearly revealed what Seokjeon's own insight was regarding Zen Buddhism. The source of these Kung-an (Topic) can be found in a typical collection of Kung-an (Topic) among Zen Buddhism's literature. Meanwhile, Seokjeon tried to help general Buddhists understand the literature of Zen Buddhism. Therefore, Seokjeon made an effort to arouse the interest of Buddhists by directly annotating the texts of Zen Buddhism, which were traditionally the most widely read. In this way, the emergence of full-fledged popular magazines in the modern and contemporary history of Korean Buddhism has an important meaning as an effort to convey Buddhist teachings to the general public through mass media. Moreover, Buddhism also presented various aspects in specific areas related to Zen Buddhism, such as criticism of the Kung-an (Topic) corresponding to Zen Buddhism's ideology, translation of Zen Buddhism's literature, and criticism of the abstruse doctrines of Zen Buddhism. The significance of this can be seen in the fact that enlightenment, instruction, and faith were instilled in Buddhists through the popular magazines of the time.
