This study aims to reinterpret the nonverbal dimension of Seon practice from the perspective of adolescent resilience and to elucidate the operative mechanisms of picture-book Seon meditation. Based on the recognition that language-centered approaches grounded solely in explanation and admonition are insufficient to foster adolescents’ self-regulation and inner transformation, this study examines, through a review of the literature, the Seon Buddhist view of language, the practice structure of abiding [住] and awareness [知], and the symbolism, blank space, and contemplative quality of picture books. In this study, Seon practice refers to the broader traditional principles and structure of Seon cultivation, whereas picture-book Seon meditation refers to an applied meditative model that rearticulates those principles within a contemporary educational context. The findings suggest that the nonverbal dimension of Seon practice does not lie in negating language itself; rather, it may be understood as a principle of practice that discloses experience prior to the onset of linguistic discrimination. On this basis, the operative mechanisms of picture-book Seon meditation may be organized into three interrelated layers. First, it begins with a nonverbal awareness of sensations, emotions, and memories evoked by the images and scenes of a picture book. Second, these responses are observed within suspension of judgment and abiding, without being immediately interpreted or evaluated. Third, through this process, inner stability is formed and one’s relation to suffering is newly reconfigured. These three mechanisms do not function as isolated units; rather, they constitute a continuous structure closely connected to key subcomponents of adolescent resilience, including self-awareness, emotional regulation, attentional stability, and the reconstruction of experience. Accordingly, picture books are not merely reading materials or auxiliary therapeutic tools. Rather, they may serve as a practical medium through which the nonverbal principles of Seon practice become experientially accessible in educational settings for adolescents. The significance of this study lies in reinterpreting the nonverbal dimension of Seon practice within the contemporary context of adolescent education and healing, and in proposing picture-book Seon meditation as a Buddhist educational and meditative model for enhancing adolescent resilience.
