메데이아 신화의 스릴러적 변용을 활용한 현대 여성 서사 캐릭터 연구: <더 글로리>와 <헤어질 결심>을 중심으로

Since the introduction of the Analytical Psychology suggested by Carl Gustav Jung, A number of researchers have tried to apply the theory to the practical use of plot and narrative building. We aimed to analyze the practical application of the contemporary transformation of Medea’s mythic archetype in modern film trends in South Korea. This case series analysis examined films that utilized the old ‘Revenge Plot’ archetype, one of Medea’s mythic archetypes which specifically set a woman as the main character, and compares their narrative structures between genres. In the romance genre, the films included were a movie <The housemaid>(1960) and a Drama <The World of the Married>(2020). For the thriller genre, a movie <Decision to Leave>(2022) and a drama <The glory>(2023) were included. By schematizing components of narrative Medea’s mythic archetype applied in the narrative structure, this study showed how the main character is positioned as a being of the perpetrator as well as a victim in various violence. The violence engages beyond domestic violence to expand the character’s subjectivity. The woman character in the current film trend in South Korea has expanded their desire from post-patriarchal liberation within the romance genre. Rather, the character seeks liberation from further social violence. This study showed evolving portrayal of women in South Korean film and how the mythic archetype has been incorporated in the progress.
