초록
This study compared and analyzed the request speech act strategies of Korean learners in Korea(KSL), Mongolian learners in Mongolia(KFL), Korean native speakers(KNS), and Mongolian native speakers(MNS). The analysis revealed that the KFL, KNS, and KSL groups preferred indirect and mitigated strategies such as “inquiring about the hearer’s ability or feasibility,” whereas the MNS group more frequently used direct strategies such as “explicit requests” and “asking for permission.” In terms of supportive moves, all groups most frequently employed the “providing situational details/giving reasons” strategy; however, MNS showed higher proportions of “apologizing” and “hedging,” while KNS exhibited a relatively higher rate of “no supportive move.” The situation- and variable-specific analysis indicated that the nature of the request, the level of intimacy, and the social power relationship significantly influenced strategy choice, with greater indirectness observed when addressing a higher-authority interlocutor. These findings demonstrate that request speech acts are discourse behaviors shaped by both linguistic universals and cultural specificities, highlighting the need for pragmatics instruction in Korean language education that is tailored to learners’ cultural backgrounds.
