초록

Objectives This study aims to examine the visual construction of melancholia in Act II of Giselle, with a focus on costume and stage production within the aesthetic framework of Romantic ballet. Methods Grounded in Julia Kristeva’s theory of melancholia, this study adopts a qualitative visual analysis combined with an interpretive approach to analyze Act II of Giselle. The analysis focuses on visual and formal elements, including costume, stage setting, lighting, props, and bodily movement. The 1983 Mariinsky Ballet performance was selected as the primary source of analysis, supplemented by relevant literature. Results The findings indicate that melancholia is structured through nonverbal stage elements rather than narrative progression. The white romantic tutu, dim forest setting, blue-toned lighting, and symbolic props such as the cross and lilies function as visual signifiers of loss and absence, constructing a liminal space in which the symbolic order becomes destabilized. Conclusions Act II of Giselle demonstrates that melancholia operates as a staged form rather than merely a psychological state. Through visual and sensory elements, the ballet transforms unrepresentable loss into an aesthetic experience, emphasizing the role of nonverbal expression.
