Mutual Perceptions and Realist Discourse in the Prose of Choi Myeong-gil, Kim Si-yang, and Jeong Chung-sin

초록

Choi Myeong-gil (1586-1647), Kim Si-yang (1581-1643), and Jeong Chung- sin (1576-1636) share a notable commonality: they were all pragmatic realists. Amid the fierce clashes of political and military powers during the early 17th century―marked by war and internal strife―these three figures refused to abandon their respective posts at the frontlines of national defense and foreign diplomacy. In doing so, they often stood in opposition to dominant public opinion (Gongnon, 公論) of their time. Responding flexibly to the rapidly changing international environment, Jeong, Kim, and Choi played key roles in shaping Joseon's foreign and military policies toward the Ming and Qing dynasties. Kim and Jeong, stationed in Uiju Province, detained royal envoys sent by King Injo to sever ties with the Later Jin, while Choi led efforts within the royal court to ease tensions with the Qing. Their foremost priority was the prevention of war and the resolution of conflict. Despite facing intense criticism and condemnation from the ruling ideological factions of their day, posthumous evaluations of their actions have remained consistently favorable among certain circles. Importantly, these three men were neither ideologically fixated nor politically allied; they differed in political affiliation, social origin, and regional background. Nonetheless, they exhibited a shared pragmatic approach, demonstrating converging views based on situational judgment rather than factional loyalty. Although their prose writings contain limited direct references to one another, they reveal a clear sense of mutual understanding and emotional affinity. However, later biographical narratives constructed by their descendants often portray strained and antagonistic relationships, reflecting how the pragmatic stance of these figures was marginalized by contemporary elites, and their individual legacies were subsequently reinterpreted through the lens of differing realist discourses.
