Imperial/Colonial Chains of Thought in Ethics — Ethics Courses at Gyeongseong Imperial University —

초록

This article examines ethics courses at the philosophy department of Gyeongseong (Keijo) Imperial University. Existing studies have focused on analyzing textbooks of moral teachings in early modern Korea, and on the establishment of ethics as an academic discipline after liberation. This research explores the development of ethics in Japanese Imperial Universities, against the background of Western ethics, and specifically how it was understood at the philosophy department of Gyeongseong Imperial University. To study the history of ethics in colonial Korea, this paper looks at the work of Shimamoto Ainosuke, who taught an ethics course at Gyeongseong Imperial University from 1926 to 1931, and also at that of Tetsujiro Inoue and Rikijo Nakajima, who had taught Shimamoto at Tokyo Imperial University. In the West at the time, the dominant theory of ethics was the self-realization theory of the British Idealist T. H. Green. By examining how this discourse was received in Japan, and how it was later transformed in Korea, this paper attempts to characterize ethics in imperial Japan and colonial Korea.
