초록

This article examines the Joseon court’s diplomatic response to the Yi Si-sul incident of 1662—an episode involving the illegal border crossing by residents of Uiju—and analyzes the significance of Jeong Tae-hwa’s yeonhaeng poems and related writings composed during this process. At a time when relations between Joseon and Qing appeared to have stabilized after the Manchu invasions, the Qing envoy’s direct investigation of Joseon officials and his forceful demand for accountability created considerable shock within the court and among the literati. Amid this tension, Jeong Tae-hwa, serving as chief envoy, organized the structure of the incident through diplomatic documents and statements, while also recording the impressions and political pressures he encountered during the mission in the Eumbingnok. This study argues that these writings are not simply personal reflections but literary representations shaped by the interplay of emotions, judgments, and a sense of responsibility formed in the course of diplomatic negotiation. Jeong Tae-hwa’s poems reveal the points at which the psychological and political burdens borne by envoys, domestic public opinion, and pressure from the Qing court intersected during the crisis. His travel writings render the multiple layers of meaning that Joseon had to navigate in resolving the incident—such as the realities of border management, the burden of state accountability, and pervasive anxiety within the literati—by giving literary shape to these issues beneath the ostensibly dry exterior of a diary-like format. By examining how Jeong’s literary representations and the diplomatic reality illuminate one another, this article explores the political sensibility embedded in his yeonhaeng writings and considers the broader possibilities of diplomatic literature in late Joseon.
