『효행록(孝行錄)』에 나타난 중국 효 서사의 수용 양상과 교육적 함의

This study aims to analyze the modes of reception of Chinese filial piety narratives in 『Hyohaengrok』 and to explore their implications for literary education. To this end, the study examines the text’s reception structure across three layers: the selection of Chinese filial narratives by Gwon Jun and Gwon Bu, the encomiums (chan) by Lee Jehyeon, and the commentaries (ju) by Gwon Geun. The analysis yields the following findings. First, the original narratives in 『Hyohaengrok』 are not neutral reproductions of Chinese sources but are the result of a primary level of reception, selectively organized according to specific criteria. Second, Lee Jehyeon’s encomiums (chan) function as an affective and evaluative layer of reception, guiding readers’ emotional responses while extending the meaning of the narratives into general moral standards. Third, Gwon Geun’s ju provide detailed explanations based on the narratives and the chan, legitimize their meanings through references to Confucian classics and historical anecdotes, reinterpret extreme acts of filial piety within ethically acceptable frameworks, and expand their significance to the levels of family, society, and broader human relations. At the same time, Gwon Geun’s commentaries (ju) deepen interpretation by incorporating and elaborating upon the content of the chan. From these findings, it can be concluded that 『Hyohaengrok』 is a text characterized by a multilayered reception structure consisting of “narrativeencomium commentary.” This structure demonstrates that textual meaning is not fixed but is continuously constructed through successive acts of interpretation. Accordingly, 『Hyohaengrok』 offers important implications for literary education: it foregrounds interpretation as a process rather than a result, highlights the historicity of reading in which the same text is interpreted differently across contexts, and provides a model for reflecting on pedagogical practices that guide and organize learners’ interpretations.
