고운사 야운시성의 사상 고찰

Venerable Yaun-Sisung(野雲時聖) was a distinguished monk who resided at Goun-sa Temple, and his Collected writings (Yaundasa Munjip 野雲大師文集) reveal various aspects of his true character. This study examines three key aspects of the teachings he expounded through both verses (gāthās) and prose in his Collected writings. First, he cited a range of scriptures such as the Heart Sutra (Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya Sūtra), the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, and the Diamond Sutra (Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra) as means of guiding his disciples. Through these quotations, he not only provided doctrinal instruction but also conveyed his own understanding of the teachings contained in the sutras. Second, through the poetic and prose writings included in the Collected writings, he expressed diverse forms of Buddhist devotion—such as faith in Amitābha Buddha and in Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva—as part of his efforts to spiritually guide disciples engaged in meditative practice. His religious teachings were thus conveyed both in verse and in prose, reflecting his versatile approach to spiritual education. Third, his zen style(禪風) is reflected in his use of numerous gong’ans (公案), such as the well-known “Does a dog have Buddha-nature?” (狗子無佛性話), drawn from classical zen records. In doing so, he demonstrated the qualities of a true spiritual teacher who guides others through the path of awakening. Yaun spent most of his life at Gounsa Temple and a few other monasteries. While embodying the demeanor of an enlightened master, he also composed poetry and prose as expedient means for instructing his disciples. As a zen monk, he not only emphasized the realization of zen core through reliance on scriptures (藉敎悟宗), but also embraced and taught devotional practices that rely on the “other-power” (他力). In doing so, he was able to skillfully and freely train disciples of varying spiritual levels. Such aspects of Yaun’s thought and activity are thoroughly embodied and vividly expressed throughout the three volumes of his Collected Works.
