Reading the Family Narrative of Death of a Salesman through the Lens of Relationship Addiction -Implications for “Thinking and Expression” Education Based on University Students’ Pre-Class Review Assignments-

초록

This study recontextualizes Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman through the lens of relationship addiction theory and explores its implications for university “Thinking and Expression” education by qualitatively analyzing 61 pre-class review essays written in a general education course at D University before the introduction of relationship addiction, codependency, and experiential learning theories. In these reviews, where students selected the scene that most provoked anger or criticism and explained their reasons, the responses cluster into four types that closely correspond to core elements of relationship addiction theory, including repetition, vicious cycles, intergenerational transmission, complicity, and codependency. Viewed through Kolb's experiential learning theory, the pre-class writings function as concrete experience and reflective observation and support a three-stage instructional model linking affect-based pre-class review writing, concept-building of relationship addiction and codependency using students’ own expressions, and critical and reflective writing and discussion on both the text and students’ lived relationships, thereby integrating literary reading, experiential learning, and “Thinking and Expression” education.
