A Study on China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Policy

초록

Intangible cultural heritage is a living cultural asset transmitted orally and through practices across generations, reflecting the wisdom and spirit of a nation while contributing to national development and the improvement of citizens’ quality of life. However, the spaces for its preservation are shrinking due to modernization, urbanization, Western cultural influences, and a lack of awareness regarding traditional culture protection. Protecting intangible cultural heritage is a long-term task that is difficult to accomplish solely by individuals or civil society, requiring systematic government-led policy interventions. This study analyzes China’s policies on intangible cultural heritage protection, examining the necessity and importance of government involvement. It reviews government functions, guiding principles, current status, and existing problems, while drawing on advanced international cases to identify policy issues and underlying causes. Based on this, feasible improvement measures suitable for China are proposed in terms of government organization, financial management, and administrative systems. The study also discusses implications for South Korea’s policies on intangible cultural heritage protection.
