‘조선민속학’에서 ‘민족문화학’으로 －그 정치성을 중심으로－

초록

Looking back on the footsteps of Korean folkloristics over the past 100 years, we can assume the following two stages in terms of methodology. One is essentialist folkloristics that has been going on for 80 years in the 20th century, and the other is non-essentialist folkloristics that has been going on for 20 years in the 21st century, which attempts to overcome it. Of course, the history of folkloristics in the former 20th century was not all smooth and loose. In particular, the period of liberation, when the ‘Chosun Folklore’ that unfolded during the Japanese colonial period transformed into the national cultural studies after liberation, requires special attention. This is because there is a large discontinuity in politics and ideology between the two. The problem is that such a discontinuity does not guarantee discontinuity in the methodology of folklore studies. It is precisely the continuity of discontinuity or discontinuity of continuity that is the important point and task that the study of Korean folklore studies in the past century must look at. Based on this understanding, this article discussed two key figures who devoted themselves to the research of so-called ‘Chosun Folklore’ before liberation and led the establishment and activities of the Chosun Folklore Society, a specialized academic society. They are none other than Son Jin-tae and Song Seok-ha. In the main text, the process from the birth to the end of ‘Chosun Folklore Studies’ and its academic society is briefly described based on recent new research results. Next, by focusing the discussion on the liberation space of the two protagonists who went through the journey together, I analyzed the political nature of the transformation of the two's ‘Chosun Folklore’ into ‘National Cultural Studies’. Furthermore, I briefly mentioned the process of institutionalization of their new ‘Folklore=National Cultural Studies’ after the 1950s in academic terms.
