초록

This discussion deals with how to inherit and expand the value of patriotic Buddhism, which is the value of the Hogukdaejeon, which was completed in November 2024. The Hogukdaejeon is a memorial space that inherits the spirit of patriotic Buddhism and honors the Righteous monks. It is also an educational and cultural space that socializes and expands the collective memory of patriotic Buddhism. The starting point is the construction of Pyochungsa Shrine in 1788 to commemorate the Righteous Army General Seosan Hyujeong and the Righteous Army Generals of the Imjin War. Through this, the collective memory of Daeheungsa received national approval and became an official memory. The memory and presentness of these efforts were projected into the Hogukdaejeon. In order to socially spread the collective memory of ‘patriotic Buddhism,’ I proposed a plan for universalization, recontextualization, and expansion of the memory. To this end, we should enshrine memorial facilities such as tablets containing the names of the Righteous monks who will confirm the value and authenticity of patriotic Buddhism. While remembering and commemorating this, we should strive to expand the universal values ​​of patriotic Buddhism, which are compassion and peace. In addition, in order to expand the social value of the Hogukdaejeon, the entrance space and the intermediate space for entering the Hogukdaejeon within the Daeheungsa Temple grounds should be reconstructed and rearranged as a ‘meditation space.’ In order to expand the value and cultural memory of the Hoguk Buddhism, tools such as media art should be utilized in the Hogukdaejeon. In particular, in order to socially expand the patriotic Buddhism as a collective memory, it was proposed to build a Hogukdaejeon (護國大典), a digital archive of the patriotic Buddhism that aims to utilize complex content. Through this discussion, I hope that the Hogukdaejeon will contribute to establishing itself as a space that contains the value and history of Korea’s patriotic Buddhism and inherits and practices them.
