초록

This study analyzes the current status and characteristics of historical materials held by public institutions in Yeoju City and, based on this analysis, explores directions for local history research and the utilization of these materials. Yeoju underwent a series of changes in the modern and contemporary periods, including the consolidation and reorganization of administrative districts and the elevation of Yeoju County to Yeoju City. These historical transformations are reflected in the establishment and reorganization of educational institutions, courts and police agencies, agricultural cooperatives and post offices, and other public institutions. Accordingly, this study selected major institutions for investigation among public institutions in Yeoju City by considering their historical significance, institutional continuity, and the likelihood of possessing relevant materials. It then examined various types of materials held by these institutions, including documents, periodicals, pamphlets, photographs, audiovisual materials, and books. A total of 4,142 materials were identified in public institutions within Yeoju City, with photographic materials accounting for the largest proportion. Historical materials held by educational institutions and diverse documents preserved by other public institutions are expected to serve as important primary sources for reconstructing not only the histories of individual institutions but also the educational history, everyday life, administrative history, and community history of Yeoju. These materials are particularly significant in that they reveal concrete changes in local society and traces of residents’ lives that are often difficult to capture in macro-level historical narratives centered on the nation or central institutions. This study provides the first comprehensive survey of historical materials preserved by public institutions in Yeoju, an area that has not previously been subject to systematic investigation, and evaluates these materials as valuable public assets for local historical research. It further proposes practical measures for their utilization, including the institutionalization of record collection, the enactment of a local ordinance, and the establishment of a Yeoju History Archive. Finally, the study argues that these materials should be recognized not merely as records to be preserved but as fundamental resources for historical research, education, exhibitions, and the development of cultural content.
