Life Displayed, Literature Displaced: Exhibition Narrative and Curatorial Focus on Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Hall

초록

This study examines the exhibition narrative of the Heo Nanseolheon Memorial Hall and analyzes how the author is represented within the exhibition space. A literary memorial functions as a “site of memory” that reconstructs the past and shapes visitors’ perceptions. This study investigates spatial composition, visitor flow, and the selection and presentation of works. The analysis shows that the exhibition is structured around a biographical narrative rather than a literary approach. Literary works function mainly as supplementary elements explaining the author’s life and emotions, shifting the focus from literature to life. Emotional themes such as tragic life, resentment, and maternal loss are repeatedly emphasized, leading to the representation of Heo Nanseolheon as a “tragic woman.” In addition, emotionally accessible works are foregrounded, while those reflecting deeper intellectual and imaginative dimensions are limited. The spatial arrangement further reinforces this emotional narrative. As a result, the exhibition reduces the author’s literary achievements by framing her primarily as a tragic figure. This study suggests the need for a more balanced approach that incorporates literary interpretation in future exhibitions.
