초록

This study investigates the reason and meaning of Manhae’s planning of the literary act of “Calling a Nim” through the publication of “The Silence of Nim” (1926). To this end, the context of creation related to the publication of Manhae’s poetry collection, the process of securing its own meaning, and the responses of contemporary readers to the poetry collection were examined. This paper proceeded as follows. First, while examining the context of creation related to the publication of “The Silence of Nim,” focusing on Manhae’s life, thought, and cultural history at the time, the intention and purpose of Manhae’s planning of the literary act of publishing a collection of poetry were analyzed. In this process, the characteristics of the poetry collection were revealed in connection with “Annotation to the Ten Profound Verses[十玄談註解],” whose publication period overlaps with “The Silence of Nim.” The reason why Manhae attempted to embody “Calling a Nim” in his collection of poetry was identified from the viewpoint of the practice of Mahayana Buddhism, namely “Attaining Spiritual Enlightenment and Saving All Sentient Beings[上求菩提下化衆生],” considering Manhae’s egalitarianism and Buddhistic saviorism, view of literature, and the cultural and historical context of the time. Next, the process of Manhae’s “Calling a Nim” securing its own meaning and being accepted by readers at the time was examined. In this process, attention was paid to the arrangement and statement of “Redundant Words[군말].” Manhae wanted to convey to the public through the collection of poetry “Calling a Nim’s” multi-layered symbolism beyond the matter of love and apparent meaning of “Calling a Nim.” The meaning was clarified in terms of “Becoming Buddha by understanding the nature of self[見性成佛]” and “Non-duality of self and others[自他不二].” Furthermore, to understand how Manhae’s “Calling a Nim” planning was accepted by readers at the time, the first book reviews of “The Silence of Nim” by Yoo Gwang-ryeol and Joo Yo-han were analyzed. This study comprehensively analyzed Manhae’s life and thoughts as a monk, reviewed of books by readers at the time, and social and cultural phenomena before and after the publication of the poetry collection. Through this, it is meaningful that the planning intention of Manhae’s “Calling a Nim” and the process of securing the meaning were identified in detail.
