서울 종남산의 철학과 사상 ― 동국대학교 개교 120주년을 맞이하며 ―
초록
This paper examines the philosophy and thought that have developed over the past thousand years at Mount Jongnam(Namsan) in Seoul. Mount Jongnam is located in the southern village of Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty. The study looked at prominent thinkers who lived here during the Joseon period, such as Chwigumheon Park Paeng-nyeon, Seoe Yu Seong-ryong, and Yeohae Yi Sun-sin, as well as professors affiliated with philosophy and thought-related departments in universities established here during the modern era. It was understood that Park Paeng-nyeon's philosophy of loyalty and integrity[忠節], Yu Seong-ryong's philosophy of mind governance[主宰], and Yi Sun-sin's philosophy of mental management[忠武] were all formed during the period they stayed at Mount Jongnam. Their philosophies were based on Confucian Neo-Confucianism, which served as the ruling ideology of the Joseon dynasty. Although their philosophies were based on self-cultivation and the well-being of the people, they were no different from the inquiry into the nature of humanity and the world. Dongguk University, currently located in Namchon, has continued through the 'Taraksan Wonheungsa era' (Changsin-dong, 1906–1915) and the 'Bukaksan Heungdeoksa era' (Hyehwa-dong, 1915–1946) to the 'Jongnamsan Jogyesa era' (Pildong, 1946–2026), firmly establishing its presence in Pildong for 80 years. The academic work and thought of scholars from Dongguk University's departments of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Samgha (Seon) Studies, and Ethics, as well as Hanyang University's Department of Philosophy and Dankook University's Department of Philosophy, were also seen as having been formed at Mount Jongnam. Their thoughts were developed within the institutional framework provided by the university as a space. For this reason, it can be said that their ideas were developed more within the flexibility between fundamental(the hidden way) and phenomena(the manifest way) than within the tension between ultimate(the true truth) and expedient means(the conventional truth). The philosophy based on this principle of dual truths and thoughts based on dual ways will serve as nourishment for young philosophers to live in reality, and it is expected that a new change in the space of Mount Jongnam will be initiated by those who live here. Neo-Confucian scholars, such as Park Paeng-nyeon, Yu Seong-ryong, and Yi Sun-sin of the Joseon Dynasty, risked their lives to expound their philosophies, but since not all Ph.D.s in philosophy of the Daehan Era were appointed to universities, they had no choice but to continue their research based on the philosophy and ideas they liked. Currently, those who have earned Ph.D.s in Philosophy from universities are advancing across the nation, starting from the Mount Jongnam region, to spread their philosophies and ideas. Now, facing the age of artificial intelligence, I hope that the philosophers and thinkers of Mount Jongnam will also launch movements for Seowons, Lecture halls, Zen centers, Meditation centers, Chanting centers, and Research institutes through new ideological activities that respond to the Seowon movement of Confucian scholars during the Joseon Dynasty.
