초록

This paper analyzes Maiok's Cost of Living through the lens of Ulrich Beck's concept of "personalized risk" as a backdrop to the individualization of modern society and the "fact of human dependence," which states that dependence is a natural attribute and fact inherent in the existence of every living human being. First, I will briefly review how the theme of disability in the work connects to the discussion of risk society. Then, I will examine the situation of Eddie and Jess in terms of personalized risk, and finally, focusing on the relationship between John and Jess, I will interpret the meaning of the act of caring in terms of vulnerability and dependence. In doing so, I will argue that physical precarity is more convincingly represented in the work not 'in spite of' disability, but 'because of' disability; that the film makes the audience aware of the intertwining of oppressive forces that threaten all disenfranchised people, not just those with disabilities; and that it is a work of practice for moving beyond authoritarianism, instrumental rationality, and consumerism to the expression of positive forces such as solidarity and diversity.
