A Study of Kana Notations on Four Editions of Shubun-Inryaku: Focus on Group Guo・Jia

초록

In this paper, we analyzed the phonetic forms of characters in the Group Guo・Jia(果・假) as found in the four editions of Shubun- Inryaku(聚分韻略), comparing and contrasting them with Go’on and Kan’on sources. The summarized results are as follows. 1. For the first open rhyme Ge(歌), in all four editions of Shubun-Inryaku, the most common form is the -a type, where it is not possible to distinguish between Go’on and Kan’on based solely on phonetic forms. However, distinction can be made through the initial consonants. For example, the characters with the initial Ni(泥) [タア 娜, タ儺那, ダ 儺] are identified as Kan’on, whereas [ナ 那娜奈] is identified as Go’on. 2. For the first closed rhyme Ge(戈), in all four editions of Shubun-Inryaku, the most common forms are -wa and -a types. Characters with phonological voicing distinctions reflected as nasals, such as [ナ捼愞 ] and [マ魔摩磨劘麼], are classifiable as Go’on, whereas those reflected as voiced stops, such as [タ愞捼稬], [ダ捼], and [バ磨] are classifiable as Kan’on 3. For the second open rhyme Ma(麻) appears predominantly in the -a form across all four editions of Shubun-Inryaku. As medial glides in Go’on typically result in an -e vowel, the majority of these forms are identified as Kan’on. In addition, [マ罵蟆禡麻] with the Ming(明) initial are identified as Go’on, while [ハ馬禡] and [バ馬罵] are identified as Kan’on. 4. For the second closed rhyme Ma(麻), the four editions of Shubun-Inryaku record it predominantly in the -wa form. Since only Go’on medial glides typically appear as -we, and both Go’on and Kan’on are commonly realized as -wa, distinguishing between the two is difficult based solely on phonetic form. However, the appearance of [クワ譁華化] with the Xiao(曉) initial indicates a tendency toward Kan’on annotation. 5. For the third open rhyme Ma(麻), the four editions of Shubun-Inryaku primarily record the -ja form. As the phonetic forms alone do not allow a clear distinction between Go’on and Kan’on, [ジヤ虵麝] with the Chuang(牀) initial may be interpreted as Go’on, while [シヤ若] and [ジヤ若] with the Ri(日) initial are identified as Kan’on.
