초록
The Clay Seated Amitabha Triad at Muryangsa Temple, Buyeo is a large clay Buddha statue from the late Joseon period, created by Hyeonjin in 1633. Although the dedication text found inside the statue reveals 20 sculptor monks, and 124 lay supporters participated in its creation, neither this inscription nor any of the records of major construction projects at Muryangsa Temple in the 17th century mention any members of the royal family. This project demonstrates that it was a 17th-century reconstruction effort carried out through the cooperation of the temple, monks, and local donors. Grounded in Amitabha faith, the temple maintained the Amitabha Triad iconography, reflecting postwar aspirations for rebirth in the Pure Land. Large clay Buddha statues in the early 17th century were based on local craftsmanship and the networks of eminent monks. The abbot Tak Gyu enlisted sculptors associated with Byeokam Gakseong. The Amitabha Triad at Muryangsa Temple is a work from Hyeonjin’s third period in a revised three-phase classification of his stylistic development, yet it also exhibits the Ω-shaped folds in the robes characteristic of his second period. Furthermore, it demonstrates that a high-quality Buddhist project can be carried out through the collaboration of monastic communities and skilled Buddhist sculptors.
