The Effect of Acculturation Stress on Delinquency Among Multicultural Adolescents: The Mediating Effect of Internalization Problems

초록

Multicultural adolescents are forced to leave their familiar environment and face many changes by belonging to acculturation groups. The acculturation stress experienced during this process can negatively affect the lives and mental health of multicultural adolescents and hinder their adjustment to Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the factors that influence delinquency among multicultural adolescents living in Korea. Specifically, based on the results of the literature review, this study was conducted to examine the effects of acculturation stress experienced by multicultural youth living in Korea on delinquency and to examine the mediating role of multicultural youth's internalization problems in the relationship between these variables. Furthermore, policy implications related to multicultural youth delinquency were suggested. The results showed that higher levels of acculturative stress experienced by adolescents were associated with higher levels of depression and social withdrawal, and that depression and social withdrawal played a mediating role in the relationship between acculturative stress and delinquency. Acculturation stress, on the other hand, did not have a significant direct effect on delinquency. Based on these findings, policy recommendations and limitations are presented.
