초록

This study statistically examines the social factors influencing the perception of the necessity of unification among young adults in their 20s in South Korea. Utilizing data from the “KINU Unification Survey (2014–2021),” the study employs ordinal logistic regression analysis to investigate how attitudes toward North Korean defectors, perceptions of current social conflicts in South Korea, and anticipated social conflicts following unification affect perceptions of the necessity of unification among this demographic. The results indicate that sensitivity to social prejudice against North Korean defectors and a positive perception of the potential for mutual benefit between young South Koreans and North Korean defectors significantly contribute to a higher perceived necessity of unification. In contrast, the belief that the demands of North Korean defectors are excessive negatively influences unification perceptions. Additionally, awareness of regional conflicts in South Korean society reinforces negative attitudes toward unification, while concerns about potential ideological and generational conflicts post-unification also adversely affect perceptions of its necessity. These findings suggest that the perception of unification among young adults in their 20s is closely linked to their attitudes toward North Korean defectors and their broader understanding of social conflict. This study aims to inform the development of unification policies and education that reflect generational differences in perception. Ultimately, it seeks to lay the groundwork for helping young adults reframe unification not merely as a political agenda led by national leaders but as a crucial issue directly connected to their own lives and futures.
