Nanosilica has been widely utilized as a nanocarrier for targeted drug delivery. However, pristine nanosilica lacks an effective transduction mechanism for monitoring the delivery process. In this study, nanosilica was functionalized with carbon quantum dots (CQDs), resulting in fluorescent nanosilica (OMS@CQDs) capable of emitting a broad fluorescence band from 400 nm to 550 nm (blue to green) under suitable excitation wavelengths. Transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis revealed that the hybrid nanosilica possessed a high specific surface area of 863 m & sup2;/g and featured cylindrical pore structures with an average diameter of 2.2 nm. The material exhibited strong adsorption capacity for ibuprofen (IBU), achieving a loading of 0.06 mg IBU per 1 mg of OMS@CQDs. Drug release studies showed that 68.1 +/- 2.56% of the IBU was released within 6 h, indicating a suitable release profile for short-term treatment. Furthermore, cytotoxicity evaluation demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, with cell viabilities of approximately 98% and 100% in L929 and HeLa cells, respectively, at a concentration of 0.0625 mg/mL. Overall, the as-prepared OMS@CQDs exhibit high potential for real-world drug delivery applications, offering both effective delivery and intrinsic fluorescent signal transduction for monitoring.
